Heritage and historic building documentation.
Heritage Documentation
Historic buildings present documentation challenges that standard methods aren't designed for. Irregular geometry, fragile fabric, restricted access, and the irreplaceability of what's being recorded — these require a different approach. Alturascope provides precision reality capture for heritage and historic buildings, producing documentation that conservation architects, preservation specialists, and building owners can rely on.
What we document.
Accessible interiors and inaccessible spaces — roof voids, undercrofts, structural cavities, hidden historic fabric. Above and below visible surfaces. Exterior envelope where accessible. Conditions and materials as found. We document the building as it exists, with careful handling of the fabric and full awareness of the constraints of working in sensitive environments.
What you receive.
Every heritage documentation survey produces a millimetre-accurate point cloud captured with professional-grade LiDAR instrumentation — the kind of data that conservation architects and structural engineers can take measurements from and rely on. A navigable digital twin is provided alongside this as the accessible exploration layer for your wider team. Where structured light scanning is required for individual architectural elements or decorative detail, we deploy accordingly. You also receive a narrated conditions walkthrough, a materials and conditions report, above-ceiling documentation, a labeled photo storyboard, and ScopeWalk access.
Who this is for.
Conservation architects, heritage architects, State Historic Preservation Offices (SHPOs), preservation trusts, private owners of historic buildings, and estate managers. Whether you're planning sensitive restoration, managing an ongoing conservation programme, or simply need a complete record of the building as it stands today.
How it works.
01
Clarify the brief
We align on what you need documented, what decisions the deliverable needs to support, and any access or sensitivity requirements.
02
Coordinate access
We handle all logistics — building access, security, travel, and scheduling. Travel costs are included in project pricing.
03
Capture the site
On site we follow a disciplined capture route through ScopeWalk — structure, services, equipment, conditions. Nothing missed.
04
Deliver and access
Complete deliverable package within three to five business days, permanently accessible through your ScopeWalk portal.
Frequently asked questions.
What makes heritage building documentation different from a standard site visit? +
Heritage buildings present unique challenges: irregular geometry, fragile fabric that cannot be disturbed, restricted access to sensitive areas, and the irreplaceability of what is being recorded. Our approach combines precision reality capture with experience working in and around historic materials and sensitive environments, and an awareness of what conservation professionals need from the documentation. The deliverable is designed to serve architects, preservation specialists, and heritage bodies — not just provide a general record.
Can you document above-ceiling and confined spaces without damage to historic fabric? +
Yes. We use remote inspection platforms and specialist access techniques to document spaces that are inaccessible by conventional means — roof voids, undercrofts, structural cavities, and confined spaces within historic fabric. No scaffolding is required, and no disruption to the building fabric occurs. The documentation of these hidden spaces is often the most valuable part of the survey for conservation planning.
What file formats do you deliver for heritage projects? +
Standard deliverables include millimetre-accurate point cloud data from professional LiDAR capture, a navigable digital twin, a narrated conditions walkthrough, a materials and conditions report, labeled photo storyboards, and ScopeWalk platform access. Point cloud data is delivered in standard formats compatible with BIM and CAD workflows. We scope the deliverable format during the brief to match what your conservation team actually needs.
Do you work with State Historic Preservation Offices and UK heritage bodies? +
Our documentation is designed to meet the requirements of SHPOs, English Heritage, Historic Scotland, Cadw, and equivalent bodies. We understand the documentation standards these organisations require and produce records that support planning applications, grant submissions, and conservation management plans. If you need documentation that meets specific heritage authority requirements, we can align the deliverable accordingly.
Do you cover historic buildings in both the US and the UK? +
Yes. We operate across all fifty US states and every Canadian province, with a dedicated UK operation covering England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. Our principal has hands-on experience with some of Britain's most significant historic properties, and that background shapes how we approach heritage documentation on both sides of the Atlantic.
